A two-day National Seminar titled “Sustaining
Peace In Northeast India: Changing Dimensions” is being
organized by CDPS in collaboration with the British Deputy
High Commission, Kolkata. The seminar will be held at Guwahati,
on 13-14 February 2012.
The Seminar will be inaugurated by the
Assam Chief Minister Sri Tarun Gogoi. Former Union Home
Secretary Mr GK Pillai will deliver the keynote address.
Mr Sanjay Wadvani, British Deputy High Commissioner to Eastern
India will be the Guest of Honour.
This is indeed a critical juncture for
Northeast India: on one hand peace appears to be round the
corner in states like Nagaland and parts of Assam with the
Centre at an advanced stage of peace negotiations with the
Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of
Nagaland (NSCN-IM), the United Liberation Front of Asom
(ULFA), and several other ethnic rebel groups. On the other
hand, an entirely new dimension is being added to the insurgency
in the Northeast with a Maoist rebellion brewing and taking
shape in the region. This is just one aspect of the ‘Changing
Dimension’ in the peace and security scenario in the Northeast.
Some of the key speakers at the Seminar
would include: Dr Samir Das, Prof. & Chair, Deptt. of Political
Science, Calcutta University, Dr Alka Acharya, Professor
